SBRI is excited to announce the start of a new series on our platforms: SBRI Sessions!

This segment was inspired by our incredible communities and their questions about all things related to health, clinical research and medical conditions.

Engaging with our communities, health awareness and health education are a few of SBRI’s greatest passions, and it was only fitting that this was channeled into an interactive series, where our community team asks a team of experts to answer the many questions asked by participants, community members and partners in clinical research.

In our first set of episodes in this series research nurse, Sr Samantha James, discussed all things related to Sexually transmitted infections (STI) in honour of National STI and condom week.

Is it true that one cannot contract an STI if they use a condom during intercourse but remove it before climaxing but continue climaxing inside?

No, STI’s can be contracted through any form of unprotected sexual contact, both orally and genitally.

Is it true that one must wait eight hours after inserting a female condom before engaging in sexual intercourse?

No, a female condom is effective immediately after insertion and can be inserted up to 8 hours before sexual contact

Is it possible to urinate while a female condom is still inserted?

Yes, it is possible as the urethral opening (used for urination) is above the vaginal opening, where the female condom is inserted.

Can a person contract an STI from female ejaculation during sexual intercourse?

Yes, it is possible to contract an STI type any form of genital bodily fluid

What is the difference between an STI and an STD?

An STI can typically be treated with antibiotics
