Nelson Mandela’s legacy is celebrated on the 18th of July each year, by encouraging citizens globally to give back to their communities. It is a call to action for social justice and community service, and this year’s theme was “it’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity”. Mandela Day is not just about honouring a great leader; it’s about translating his values of service and compassion into tangible action.

For Mandela Day 2024 SBRI invited 30 disadvantaged families nominated by our Local Buffalo City Ward Counsellors, SBRI CAB (Community Advisory Board) Members and those who interact with our studies, to share in a day of fellowship and service.

We provided care packages, generously sponsored by: Synergy Biomed Research Institute, SBRI Staff and CAB members, Spar East London and Spar Berea, Phelisa Jam-Jam, Light of hope, Champion Cheap Fruit and Veg and Mthiza East London. Our team worked tirelessly to assemble and distribute the care packages filled with essential items such as food, hygiene products, and clothing. All contributions and packages were intended to address immediate needs and provide some relief to families facing economic hardships and recent losses.

The impact of SBRI’s Mandela Day celebration was palpable, with heartfelt gratitude expressed by the families who received the packages. The smiles, singing, and stories shared were a powerful testament to the difference that collective effort and compassion can make.

As we reflect on this day, we are reminded of the importance of community and the profound difference we can make through acts of kindness. Mandela Day 2024 has reinforced our belief in the power of giving and inspired us to continue our journey of support and service.

Here’s to making every day a reflection of Mandela’s legacy through acts of kindness and community spirit.
