On 22 August 2025, the Synergy Biomed Research Institute (SBRI) hosted its Empower Her Women Empowerment event at the Nu 15 Community Hall – a vibrant gathering designed to inform, inspire, and empower women across the Eastern Cape.

The event brought together young women, community leaders, healthcare professionals, and social-development organisations under one roof to share knowledge and practical tools for personal and collective growth. What began with prayer and welcome remarks from the Ward Councillor’s office evolved into a dynamic day filled with dance challenges, open dialogue, and impactful presentations on health, education, gender-based violence, and socio-economic empowerment.

SBRI’s Dr Nkosilathi Dlodlo, Principal Investigator, led an engaging session demystifying clinical research and introducing the upcoming MK8527-010 HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) study – a new trial empowering young women to make informed decisions about HIV prevention. “Clinical trials are about expanding options and ensuring that communities – especially women – can choose what works best for them,” Dr Dlodlo explained.

Speakers from the Department of Social Development, GilGal, BCM Youth, and Bumbi Ngomso shared programs that support young women through education, skills development, and victim-empowerment initiatives. Interactive Q&A sessions encouraged open discussion on topics from PrEP to menstrual health, dispelling myths and strengthening community trust in health research.

By the day’s end, more than 58 women had participated, exceeding expectations and reaffirming the community’s enthusiasm for learning and empowerment.

SBRI’s Empower Her initiative reflects our belief that empowering women with knowledge is the foundation for healthier families and stronger communities. We remain committed to building partnerships that advance women’s wellbeing, health equity, and social progress across South Africa.
