Team SBRI is known for its desire to end Tuberculosis (TB), and we were honoured to attend the 2nd Research Day, Hosted by the Centre for Infectious Diseases Research Institute-Africa (CIDRI-Africa) on 28 October 2024, at Nkqubela Chest TB Hospital in Mdantsane.

The Conference focused on sharing insights into ongoing Drug sensitive and Drug-resistant Tuberculosis centred Clinical Trials and CIDRI-Africa led research at Nkqubela, and the promising results left the SBRI Team excited for the future of TB management. The panel had a wide range of expertise and educated attendees on both the advancements and challenges facing TB testing, diagnosis and treatment, and they received a tour of the new Nkqubela laboratory.

Attendees included representatives from the CIDR-Africa, the Department of Health, Nkqubela management and staff, HAST (Eastern Cape HIV, AIDS, STI’s and TB), Desmond Tutu Health Foundation and specialists from local healthcare facilities.

With Tuberculosis resurfacing as the “Top Infectious Disease killer” (WHO), the work being done in clinical research is critical furthering knowledge on how best to fight the disease, while partnering with healthcare facilities to optimise testing, treatment initiation and adherence, and contact tracing.

The CIDRI Africa Research Day not only reinforced SBRI’s commitment to the fight against TB but also highlighted the importance of community engagement in addressing health disparities. By fostering partnerships and leveraging collective expertise, the SBRI team is poised to make a meaningful impact on healthcare delivery in the Eastern Cape, ultimately working towards better health outcomes and the end of TB.
